2018 NHL Playoffs: Shortest in Past 11 Years

Share:
I thought that this years playoffs has gone by pretty fast. Half the games in the first round were completed under 5 games. So with some simple scripts and data filtering I was able to gather averages.
  • Each playoffs had an average of 88 games played
  • Each playoffs had an average of 2 series sweeps (4-0 series)
  • Each playoffs had an average of 3 five game series (4-1 series)
  • Each playoffs had  an average of 5 seven game series (4-3)
You can compare the numbers with this year's playoffs. This year has been the least games played over the past 11 seasons.

There was also only 10 overtime games in the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs making it the fewest since 2000's which saw 9 overtime games. Half of the over time games were with the Stanley Cup champs, the capitals. (4 vs. Columbus, 1 vs. Pittsburgh). By comparision, 2017 saw a total of 27 overtime games.
